Let’s see why Army Day is celebrated today.
The Indian Army was formally established on April 1, 1895, before independence. After independence in 1947, Indian Army Day is celebrated to mark the day when a commander from our country was handed over the responsibilities as an army officer. Lieutenant General Kodandera Kipper Madappa Carriappa (KM Carriappa) took over as the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army on this day in 1949 from General Francis Butcher, the last British Commander in Chief of India. Since then, every year January 15 is observed as Indian Army Day and various programs are being organized. Today, celebrations are held to remember the bravery and sacrifices of the Indian Army, who play a vital role in protecting the nation.
Hailing from Karnataka, Cariappa served as the commander of the Western Front in the 1947 war against Pakistan. He is one of the two men in India to hold the title of Field Marshal. Another officer who received the title of Field Marshal was Sam Maneksha. Cariappa was one of the first two Indians to be selected for training at the Imperial Defense College in Camberley, Britain. Prior to taking charge as the Commander in Chief of the Indian Army, Cariappa served as the Commander of the Eastern and Western Commands of the Indian Army.
This year we are celebrating 75th Army Day. Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pandey will inaugurate the Army Day celebrations. Until last year, Army Day celebrations were held in the national capital, Delhi. Soldiers will be presented with gallantry awards and army medals as part of the ceremony to be organized today. Indian Army Day is celebrated grandly with parades and military displays.
