Mai Bhago Vidya Scheme: The Punjab government introduced this new initiative in 2011 for girls studying in government schools across Punjab. It is called the Mai Bhago Vidya Yojana. Under this scheme, girls studying in 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades in Punjab will benefit, receiving free bicycles to support their education.
The main objective of the Mai Bhago Vidya Yojana was to ensure that girls continue their education beyond the primary level. The scheme aimed to encourage more girls to enroll in and excel in middle and high school education.
Previously, in Punjab, many girls would drop out of school after 8th grade because the schools were far from their homes, making it difficult for them to commute. Approximately 90% of students in government schools come from economically weaker backgrounds, and their families cannot afford transportation expenses. The Mai Bhago Vidya Yojana was introduced by the Punjab government to assist these girls in commuting to and from school. It was launched in 2011-12 and continues to benefit girls from economically disadvantaged families.
The scheme’s namesake, Mai Bhago, was a brave Sikh woman warrior who led and inspired Sikh soldiers in the battle against the Mughals in 1705. After the war, she became revered as a saint within the Sikh community.
