Scholarships are given to deserving students from economically disadvantaged sectors in an effort to lower Class VIII dropout rates.
An annual distribution of one lakh new scholarships is given to chosen Class IX students attending state government, government-aided, and local body schools
On October 1, 2023, applicants began to submit their applications online through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) for scholarships for the project year 2023–24. Scholarships are given to deserving students from economically disadvantaged sections under the “National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme,” a program run by the Ministry of Education for students in classes IX through XII. This program aims to lower the dropout rate in Class VIII and encourage students to continue their education in secondary school. For students enrolled in State Government, Government-aided, and local body schools, one lakh new scholarships are given out each year to selected students in Class IX and upon their continuation/renewal in Classes X to XII. The award is worth ₹12,000 year.
The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS), a one-stop hub for student scholarship programs, is a section on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). The Public Financial Management System (PFMS)’s DBT mode is used to electronically transfer NMMSS scholarships to selected students’ bank accounts. A central sector scheme, that is.
The scholarships are available to students whose total parental income does not exceed 3,50,000 per year. To be eligible to take the scholarship selection test, students must have earned at least 55% of the possible points in their Class VII exam, or an equivalent grade. SC/ST students are given a 5% relaxation from this requirement.
On the National Scholarship Portal, the scholarship applications are verified twice. The Institute Nodal Officer (INO) is in charge of the first at the level of the Institution/School, and the District Nodal Officer (DNO) is in charge of the second.
