Nick Kyrgios resigned from the Australian Open after suffering a knee injury

The temperamental tennis star Kyrgios was a finalist at Wimbledon in 2013. He had suffered from soreness in his left leg but was determined to play.

MELBOURNE (Australia) — Nick Kyrgios, who had been enjoying the praises of a local favorite for the past week, suddenly pulled out of the Australian Open on Monday after suffering a knee injury. This was just 24 hours before his scheduled first round match.

Kyrgios, the Australian tennis star and temperamental Kyrgios was interviewed Friday. He said that he had been experiencing soreness in his left leg during the off-season but that he expected to be fit to play in the first Grand Slam of the year.

After a charity match against Novak Djokovic, those hopes turned sour Friday.

Kyrgios stated Monday afternoon that he was “extremely disappointed” during a press conference at Melbourne Park. “Pretty brutal. “One of the most important tournaments in my career.”

After rising from the bottom 100 in 2021, Kyrgios played deep into two Grand Slam tournaments last season. He was one of the favourites heading into the Australian Open. Last year, Kyrgios won the men’s doubles title with Thanasi Kokkinakis.

In December, Kyrgios pulled out from the United Cup, a team competition. This was just before the event started. In the hope that he would be able to recover in time for the Australian Open, he withdrew his participation from the Adelaide Open tuneup tournament.

Will Maher, Kyrgios’s long-time physiotherapist, stated during Monday’s news conference that Kyrgios had undergone an M.R.I. Last week, a cyst was discovered and there was a small tear in the meniscus. Maher stated that Kyrgios would be returning to Canberra later in the week for an operation. He will be spending February rehabbing the knee. He hopes to be able to participate in the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, Calif.

Maher stated, “He has a parameniscal cyst in his left meniscus. It is caused by a small tear to his lateral meniscus.” “It’s not serious in the sense it’s going be career-threatening or anything like that.”

Maher stated that Kyrgios had done all he could to make it possible for him to win. He had to have the cyst removed last week. The cyst was also removed by injections. However, his pain grew over the past few days. Maher stated that playing could lead to a more serious injury such as a tear of his anterior cruciate ligament (or A.C.L).

Kyrgios stated that he was unable to win in the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open in September and his thoughts shifted to the Australian Open where he enjoyed his chances on hardcourts before raucous home crowds.

Kyrgios stated, “I have always wanted to do everything right, train right and tick all the boxes, and just be prepared.” He said, “Obviously, this is bad timing. But it’s part of the sport. Injuries are a part and parcel of the sport.”

He stated that he was positive that he could regain the form that made his feared player, but that surgery is the only way.

He said, “Every time that I push off or land on serve, you can see a little lump on the side my knee.” “This lump will only get larger and more. My movement is impeded by the pressure on my knee. It is best to let it go and then get rid of the pressure.

Kyrgios will have to address another issue in Canberra over the next few weeks.

Kyrgios will be appearing in court in February to face a common assault charge stemming out of an altercation in December 2021 with his ex-girlfriend Chiara Passari. Since the issue became public in July, Kyrgios declined to talk about it.

Common assault is the most serious of all assault charges in Australia. It means that the victim suffered immediate, unlawful violence or the threat thereof, but not bodily injury. Kyrgios’s lawyers stated that they would present a defense focusing on mental illness. They cited Kyrgios’s history of substance abuse and depression, which Kyrgios said will always be there for him, but that he now has under control. The court could decide to impose treatment plans if it accepts this defense. Common assault carries a maximum sentence of two years imprisonment.
